From Coveralls to...

He applauds my ability to take something as utilitarian as a pair of coveralls and make them look "sexy as hell" (his words).

When I first showed-off my coveralls to my husband (my biggest fan) he told me his father use to make them (meaning his brothers) wear them when they worked on the cars...sans the waist defining band. He probably never thought he'd marry a woman who enjoyed wearing them ultra baggy with high-heeled sandals. But then again, he tells everyone he was attracted to my sense of stylish wit. He applauds my ability to take something as utilitarian as a pair of coveralls and make them look "sexy as hell" (his words).

I'm reminded of an Avon commercial that aired decades ago and featured Jackie Joyner-Kersee (multi Olympic Gold Medalist in Track & Field). During the commercial, Joyner-Kersee is shown running full-throttle down a sandy beach, while her voice-over proudly states how fast she can sprint, how far she can jump, etc. At the end of the segment she states ..."and I have red polish on my toes."

This commercial made such an impact on my life with its powerful statement about the accomplishments, abilities, and female mystique. Joyner-Kersee worked hard to reach her goals as a world-class athlete, and yet, with all her athletic abilities and accolades, she still relished in the sacred practice of womanly self-care.

Who would have guessed that when I picked up these vintage coveralls from the 1980s, they would become all the rage in 2018? If you haven't noticed, Coveralls (Utility Jumpsuits) are the latest 'Right Now' item. The ones I'm wearing come from a vintage boutique, however, you'll be able to find a variety of styles and fabrications from a vast list of shopping destinations. I've taken liberty in scoping out a couple for your shopping pleasure:
'Bad Hair Day' cap: Dolce Blossom Boutique (call to order 909.680.7820 PST)
The red polish on my toes is Fishnet Stockings by Essie

Don't be fooled. The closest I've ever gotten to working on a car is when I sit in the yard to keep my husband company while he toils away at maintaining one of our big, oily contraptions. Sometimes he'll ask me to pass him the wrench but that's as close as it gets.

Yes, we work hard - we know this to be true. There's no need to rehash the laundry list of daily activities we partake in as women. Yet and still, with all the busyness and hustle in life, we have to ask ourselves, "What would Jackie Joyner-Kersee do?"

Stay True,
Glenda XoX
