Fashion Personality (part 5 of 6): the Minimalist

Welcome to part 5 of a 6-part series on Fashion Personality! The purpose of this series is to introduce you to the 6 basic personalities I discuss with my Harmony Approach clients, and to give understanding on how knowing yourself is the open gateway into having true style. For this week's style story, I introduce you to the Minimalist personality. But first, allow me to reiterate the meaning and scope of the term - Fashion Personality:
What is Fashion Personality? In laymen terms, it means to dress in a way that expresses who you are. However simple the definition may be, the idea of dressing to express who you are requires just that...knowing who you are. In this hyper-voyeuristic world we currently live in, it becomes easy to adopt from others without considering our own depth of layers - layers that shouldn't be concealed, rather, when carefully unearthed, will reveal a beautiful tapestry about the person.

When I think of the Minimalist fashion personality, the word Chic comes to mind. Typically, when Chic is used, it's often in reference to being well-dressed. When in essence, the meaning has much more depth. Chic implies a shine or having edges. Interesting motif, I know, but consider closely a minimalist personality. This fashion type is defined by having a way of dress that is contemporary (or modern), clean, and streamline. Now, do you see the correlation between the Minimalist and Chic?

With her 'less is more' style of dress, the Minimalist will never qualify as being dull. On the contrary, she is masterful of appearing untethered from the bells and whistles of fashion, while still having a high degree of fashion and style sensibility. When I think of a celebrities who embody this personality, my mind immediately goes to Gwyneth Paltrow and content creator, Garance Dore - never over done, yet never dull (see images below).

My approach to the Minimalist personality has some southwest influences - with embroidered details and tassel sandals. The look is uncomplicated, but not boring. Notice how the criss-cross detail on my cuff mimics the detail on the back of the dress and my tie-up sandals.

  • 'Less is More' is the mantra
  • Appreciates well-made items with clean lines and details
  • No matter what the Minimalist chooses to wear, there is always a streamlined effect to it
