Fashion Personality (series): Classic...with a Twist

The term, Fashion Personality, is widely discussed within the world of personal styling. What is Fashion Personality? In laymen terms, it means to dress in a way that expresses who you are. However simple the definition may be, the idea of dressing to express who you are requires just that...knowing who you are. In the hyper-voyeurism world we currently live in, it becomes easy to adopt from others without considering our own depth of layers - layers that shouldn't be concealed, rather, when carefully unearthed, will reveal a beautiful tapestry about the person.

When my clients grasp a full understanding of their personality or personalities (you can have multiple personalities), then a vital step into unearthing their harmonious personal style is achieved. In TRUE STYLE: A Look Beyond the Surface, I dedicate a section to the concept of Fashion Personality, and discuss in greater detail how I blossomed into my own. Now, I often receive comments, such as, "Everything you wear becomes you." Comments like this, in my opinion, are a high form of style praise, and excites me more than someone simply commenting on a shoe or top. Who wouldn't want to be in such recognizable harmony with their wardrobe, that others notice? I can't think of one.

Because I view the approach to Fashion Personality as crucial, beginning with this post, I'm dedicating six style stories to bringing clarity to this point of view. Each style story will capture the six most basic types of personalities I discuss with my clients in The Harmony Approach. Today's look is The Classic. However, in order to be true to myself, I veer slightly off the classic path by adding touches that make Glenda - Glenda. If you read, Knowing Your Fashion Personality 101, then you know I refer to my Fashion Personality as Classic with a touch of Boho and a bit of Quirk. Therefore, I'm naming this post, Classic...with a Twist.

You'll notice I've 1/2 tucked my crisp white shirt (a staple in the classic wardrobe), I've done this because a fully tucked-in shirt makes me feel stiff and restricted. As I shared in Style Aesthetic 101, my underlying theme for dress is to keep things laid-back. Though the 1/2 tuck may seem odd to some, for myself, it represents my love for quirky elements, and of course, ease. Also notice my playful use of pearls (another Classic staple) - not around my neck, but on the sandals!

A quick look inside the Classic personality:
  • Thinks highly of traditions
  • Isn't prone to shopping for trends
  • Quality over Quantity is the mantra
  • Has a well-curated wardrobe built on key staple garments and accessories. Think the Little Black Dress; Crisp White Shirts; Weejun Penny Loafers, Plaid, Pearls
  • Well tailored and well made apparel is essential
  • Leans toward retailers such as: Talbot's, Ann Taylor, Ralph Lauren, L.L. Bean
  • Timeless is the buzz word

  3. Thanks Neti. The best type, in my opinion, is a no-iron shirt.
