Reunited

Hi Everyone!

I hope you're enjoying this Holiday Season. I'm popping on to share a few things with you. First, a cute story: I attended Nora of Jacket Society's Holiday Sale and Open House on December 12th. You can see the event by clicking HERE. I was excited to finally meet another Southern California blogger, and of course, to sink my teeth into more of Nora's great items. Since I was on a budget, I was only armed with a certain amount of money. I walked away from the event with a gorgeous embroidered wrap (I'll wear it soon on the blog). However, I drove home thinking...Oh goodness, I should have got the loopy sweater. I tossed and turned for two days and told my husband about the incredible find. Finally I emailed Nora to tell her I wanted to purchase the sweater, and what did she tell me...it had been sold. What?!!! I was devastated.

For two weeks I was in a dreadful funk and I walked around kicking myself for not purchasing the fun sweater. Come Christmas morning, it was time to unwrap the gifts. As I removed the wrapping from the gift from my husband, I saw a familiar gold polka-dot tissue paper and glimpse of the label underneath - Jacket Society. I ripped the tissue paper away, and lo and behold what did I see - it was the loopy sweater just for me! We were reunited once again.

For my second share, I was interviewed by the Pasadena Black Pages - a media source that celebrates the achievements of African Americans originally from the Pasadena area. You can see the entire interview by clicking HERE. In the meantime, below is the recorded portion of the interview. Enjoy!

You Decided - The Best of 2015!

I know I said I would be back for a new fashion post on December 28th. However those plans have changed. I have decided to take the remainder of the year off to enjoy the Holidays with my family. This woman works hard and I need a break. In the meantime...

With the year coming to a close, I thought it would be fun to revisit this years looks. Rather than posting numerous pictures, this time I've decided to group the posts into categories. This way, it will be easier for you to navigate through the posts. The lead picture for each category is the look that received the highest number of page views for that particular section. And since there were so many different looks for 2015, I decided to simply add the link. I also highlighted my favorite for each section. There may be duplicates in with some post because they fit with multiple categories. I must say, I had a fun time with fashion this year. As many of you know, this was an exciting year filled with many accomplishments and upgrades - I hope my fashion choices proved how thrilled I was with 2015. Enjoy!

A New Chapter - BIG Announcements!

"I sit quietly while the transformation takes place, for I know, with time and patience, the outcome will far exceed what my mind could have ever imagined. There will come a day, when from the dark liquid, shall emerge a lovely creature that flutters among the flowers; hovering about, in search of a peaceful place where it shall land."
Excerpt from A Place Called Peace by Glenda K. Harrison

My darling friends, the time has finally come to fly! Many of you were with me when the vision for A Place Called Peace came into fruition. Remember in 2014 when I shared my journey to self-discovery in a blog series? Well, it was that blog series which evolved into the book. The task of writing a book was a long and arduous road, yet and still, a road I'm most certainly willing to travel again and again. I have been holding my new baby in my arms for weeks now, while waiting patiently for the perfect season to release her into the world - A season when thoughts of writing new chapters for one's life are most prevalent.

A journey to finding self is never an easy road to navigate, but once you arrive at your destination, you feel light, as free as a butterfly, and ready to use your wings. In the final chapter, The Purpose of Butterfly Wings, you'll discover just how incredible it feels to recognize and use your wings (gifts). For a time such as this - journey to A Place Called Peace- a time of reflection and deeper introspection - a time of emotional healing, and the discovery of your own natural gifts. My friends, this is where your journey begins...

Real

“Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.'

'Does it hurt?' asked the Rabbit.

'Sometimes,' said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. 'When you are Real you don't mind being hurt.'

'Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,' he asked, 'or bit by bit?'
"It doesn't happen all at once,' said the Skin Horse. 'You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand.”
Excerpts from the Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams

The story of the Velveteen Rabbit is such a beautifully written, classic children's tale. My favorite line - 'But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand.'  Such a poignant statement. I'm reminded of a Winnie the Pooh doll my mother gave me as a child. I loved it so much it became Real. I held on to the Pooh and even passed it on to my sons. It didn't matter that one of Pooh's arms had been stitched back on, or his left eye was missing. They understood how real it was, and not ugly at all. Now the lovable bear is tucked away neatly for future off-spring to love.

To be Real is such a beautiful quality to possess, but yet, often than not, it is avoided. This idea of being real often disappears when child-like wonder fades. Then we become what is expected - with sharp edges and all...untouchable and needing to be handled with care. While being real makes one more pliable, cozy, lovable and warm.

In honor of the Velveteen Rabbit, today I'm wearing a velvet dress - a soft, cozy velvet which wraps me in love. The cut, design and print of the dress speaks to my bohemian/art-driven side. The beautiful, flutter-styled sleeves make me feel like a fairy in a fantasy.

Outfit Details: Dress Courtesy of eShakti last year (Very similar styled maxi dress by Tallulah at Nasty Gal); Vintage 70s Jeweled 'mood' set: Belonged to my mother; Crystal Pendant Necklace: Ann Taylor Loft (beautiful selection of pendant necklaces at Nordstrom); Cross-body bag: Perlina via TJ Maxx; Boots by Tahari via TJ Maxx (found Tahari boots on eBay)

In a day when there's so much hurt, suffering and the notion of being unbreakable is reverenced, I much prefer to be lovable, soft...Real like the Velveteen Rabbit. Which do you prefer?{wink}

It Steals the Show

Since watching Grace Kelly in Rear Window, I've long had a fascination for bracelets adorned with cool bobbles. Remember the scene when she and Jimmy Stewart are looking across the courtyard from the infamous window. Dressed in the lime green suit, Kelly removes her jacket to expose a white halter top; and on her arm...that jaw-dropping, multi-strand pearl bracelet that jingled as she mixed Stewart's drink. I'll never forget such an iconic fashion scene.

I now consider a bold statement piece on the arm ultra chic. Imagine this scene - picture yourself in a classic ensemble while dining with friends. You reach for your drink and the adornment on your arm gently clinks against your wine glass. The harmony resonates across the dinner table. All eyes are now on the instrument that created such a beautiful sound. It steals the show.

Today's look, while subtle in details, strikes a balance between quiet and direct. Artistic romanticism (the soft drape of the top and the ornate bracelet) mixed with southwestern (boots, denim and turquoise). However you view this ensemble, the bracelet is most definitely the coveted piece. I hope you enjoy today's look.

Today's Look: Denim Wrap Skirt by Talbots via eBay (Great selection of denim wrap skirts on eBay); Bishop Sleeve Top: Vintage (I found a few bishop sleeve tops on Etsy plus patterns); Ralph Lauren Boots via TJ Maxx (Great selection of riding boots at Nordstrom. Almost identical pair by Aquatalia 'Gaia' Weatherproof Boot); Soft Fabric Clutch: Ann Taylor Loft; Turquoise Ring purchased in Mexico; Bracelet discovered on eBay.

It's fun to wear a garment or accessory that steals the show, or sparks a conversation. Wouldn't you agree?  Enjoy your week, and don't forget to pop over to Bloom for your massage. If you missed my introduction to Bloom visit this link - Bloom...Are You Ready? {wink}

Bloom...Are You Ready?

There is a statement at the end of one of my Gaiam Pilates workout which says,
"To make life-long changes,
you have to have all aspects
of yourself working together -
spirit, mind and body."

This quote truly resonates with my spirit, as I am a firm believer in nurturing all aspects of myself. If you have visited my About page, you would have read the paragraph which states - Although fashion and style are important to her, Harrison's real passion is reminding others of the importance of self-love and using one's God-given gifts and talents. Her blog inspires readers to view fashion as an all-encompassing vehicle and encourages women to explore their personal gifts, style, femininity, and, most importantly, inner beauty.

Though So What to Twenty is more fashion driven, I try to touch on the subjects of inner beauty and life with each post. Thus the tagline - Where life and fashion intersect. However, being the multi-dimensional woman I am, I have planted, and now I'm watering a new venture on my GlendaKHarrison.com website. My new venture is a blog called - Bloom. Bloom is an opportunity to Inspire, Live and Grow in areas of personal growth, inner beauty, and living whole.  Each time you visit Bloom, I want you to feel as if you stepped into your favorite spa and treated yourself to a massage (smile).

Please, dear friends, continue to stay connected to So What to Twenty, and I would love it if you would embrace Bloom and make her a part of your weekly reading. Two subjects already posted on Bloom include:

I look forward to reading your comments here at So What to Twenty and over at Bloom {wink}
