The Great Southwest

Today I thought it would be a nice change of pace to produce a post that's derived from earthy, southwestern influences. I have mentioned to you, on previous occasions, that I'm greatly inspired by the cultures of Native Americans and Mexicans. Both cultures are catalyst for a huge trend this fall season, and though this trend is currently HOT, I always have southwestern pieces on rotation in my closet, regardless of what the fashion world says. As a matter of fact, I wrote a post on December 10th, of last year, called Spanish Flava, which gave you a first glimpse at my taste for the great southwest lifestyle.

Today's look is constructed from pieces that I've had in my wardrobe for some time. The newest piece is the hat which I purchased last year from Forever 21. The anchor for this look is a pair of Ralph Lauren boots that I purchased over 17 years ago from TJ Maxx. The dress comes from my favorite little local vintage boutique. The jewelry comes from a wide variety of places...Mexico, inherited from my mother, Anthropologie (the large colorful ring), and from a couple of boutiques. I hope you enjoy this look which was shot on a road, near my home, that housed many ranches for horse breeders.

Little did I know, that the women headed my way on horseback, would allow one of her friends to model with me. Meet my friend Tally! The woman on horseback (who fell in love with my dress) allowed me to pose with him. At first he and I had to become comfortable with one another. But after a gentle pat and a bit of coaxing, Tally and I soon became good friends.

My new friend, Tally!

A variety of jewelry adorns this look. The nail polish is Marney by Zoya

Navajo necklace and turquoise ring were inherited from my mother.

As my husband photographed these images for this post, I was reminded of the great work from artist, Georgia O'Keeffe. I felt like this post was a pastiche, of sort, to her great work. As I stood gazing up at the dusty, rolling hills, I could clearly see why she saw such beauty in the many layers that we call the great southwest{wink}

    1. Thank you Pam! Wearing the southwestern inspired looks is about the only time I go full throttle with accessories. It seems to require the over indulgence.

  9. Glenda,
    This is fabulous. Every detail, whether inherited, purchased recently, or 17 years ago, looks as if it was meant to be worn on you, this day that you wore it. I love this authentic southwest look, with a nod to Ralph Lauren. I Have passed the Ralph Lauren store ( the original flagship on madison- gorgeous- , and the one in East Hampton, too, and have seen versions of this look..
    you could have been in the window!
    Love the many poses, It always looks that you are having fun, as well as looking uber cool!

    1. Elle, you're going to make me cry. Thank you. You're so sweet. I absolutely adore Ralph Lauren. I just went to his outlet store yesterday and was literally drooling over everything. I can only imagine what the store on Madison looked like. I would go to NY just to snap pictures of the window displays. I bet they're incredible.

      This was just a wonderful day when everything worked beautifully together. I had another location in mind, but it didn't work out. So, we just got back in the car and drove around the corner and happened upon this perfect area. And yes, I am having fun. I love expressing my life through fashion.

    1. Thank you Connie. One of the things I love about living in California...the diversity in culture. The weather was lovely this past weekend, and yesterday when I had this photo shoot. But I've noticed the heat is creeping back up again. Triple digits for the weekend. Oy vey. I'm over the heat and ready to start cooking hearty meals and baking. I have such an autumn house.

  13. Hello Glenda! Stopping by to say hi and read another one of your always beautiful story telling posts. You look beautiful as always. As a latina, I am so happy to so see how you embrace different cultures and how much you know about them. My husband's mom is from New Mexico and she actually has picture taken by Ansel Adams where her dad is on a horse next to Georgia O'keeffe. This picture is very popular because is actually the only picture that Ansel Adams has taken with people in it. Thanks for sharing this beautiful post. XOXO, Jeannette

    1. Hi Mag! Wasn't the surroundings perfect for this shoot! I went to another place and it didn't work out, so my hubby and I drove around the corner and found this street filled with stables and horses. Perfection. I'm glad you like the look. When I first got the dress my husband wasn't too thrilled with it. He always says, "Well, I'll have to see how you put it together."

  24. Perfect pictures. Kuddos to your husband. He did so well.
    Of course you look ever so beautiful in this outfit. I love this style, but if I wear a summer dress, it is because it is hot and then I cannot pair it with a hat (difficult for me and my hair anyway) nor with boots. Far too hot. How do you girls do it....? It is such a great look.
