Au Naturale

I have been away from the blog so that my husband and I could celebrate our 22 year anniversary. It felt good to disconnect and just concentrate on one another. We spent our special day, the 4th of July, relaxing at the Glen Ivy Hot Springs Spa. We spent hours enjoying paradise with steel drums serenading us against the backdrop of palm trees that kissed the sky. Afterwards we had dinner reservations at the fabulous Catal restaurant, a delightful Mediterranean steakhouse which had spectacular views of the Disneyland fireworks show. It was a warm night, and we both felt relaxed after spending the day at the spa. It was such a lovely and romantic day. You can see snapshots from our day on Instagram. Enjoy!

************

Summers can be daunting in California with temperatures often hovering well above the 100 degree mark. Though we're fortunate to have dry heat rather than the humidity (most of the time), it can still be quite stifling. On days when the gauge reads 98 degrees in the shade, what does one wear when the need to dress for success is still required? For myself, the key is to go au naturale.

Get your minds out of the gutter (smile). Let's be real, I'm not suggesting that I prance around in my birthday suit. Not me...the person who is too shy to have cleavage exposed. I'm talking about wearing fabrics that are kind to us during unbearable temperatures. You know...cotton, linen, silk, etc, etc. I find that when I wear breathable fabrics, I too can breath a sigh of relief.

For today, I chose a look that's effortless and easy to wear - a thin, wispy cotton top that I purchased last year and is now a few sizes too big. I love the top even more so because it fits loosely against my silhouette. I'm also sporting a linen skirt - also from a few years back, and silk-tie-up sandals that I got ages ago. During our heated, Are You Shackled discussion, the idea of women over 40 wearing midriff tops was mentioned. Today I'm bucking the system. Yes, there is a hint of tummy showing, as I decided to leave the bottom buttons undone. Like I stated in the now famous post - women of a certain age can still rock certain looks...we just have to make subtle tweaks (click to tweet). Leaving the buttons undone gives a wink of confidence, and boy does the coolness feel good against my skin when the breeze catches my top.

Today's Look - Blouse: Loft, Skirt: Cynthia Rowley via TJ Maxx, Sandals by Marc Fisher, Clutch is vintage, Sunnies: Loft

"G" Monogram pendent from Swell Caroline, Long chain with pendents by Monet (old)

I love how my "G" pendent playfully hangs by my bare midriff.

This outfit can take you to work (with the top buttoned), an early dinner, dancing...you name it, and while remaining somewhat cooler.  Tell me friends...when the temperatures rise, what types of clothing are you most comfortable wearing, or do you go au naturale{wink}

Love the outfit. It's sexy yet appropriate. Something I need to add to my wardrobe, especially now that the hubs and I are at the point where we are traveling alone. Thank you for the inspiration.

  11. A really great shirt and versatile too. I would definitely wear everything here. I especially love the gold on the white. Very classy.
I try to stick with 100% cotton, especially when it's over 80 and muggy. I find it's even hard to find pajamas or night gowns that are all cotton. Something I've needed to look for since I tipped over that 50 mark. ;)

    1. It is hard to find natural fabrics. They always contain something else.

I'm glad you like this look. It's one of my favorites!

  12. Happy Anniversary dear Glenda ;)

What a gourgeous outfit! Very elegant and stylish. I love this wonderful white blouse and I fell in love with your skirt. The length, the cut and .. of course the fabrics are fabulous! I like to wear on hot days airy, bright, casual and comfortable clothing made of natural materials such as cotton, linen and silk.
In the African and Arab countries, people wear at maximum heat always long clothes in natural materials. This certainly has a meaning and purpose. These clothes work as an air conditioner and you sweat certainly not as much as when you are walking around half-naked.
But in our countries we like to wear mini skirts and midriff tops and sleeveless shirts :)

    have a gorgeous day

    1. I'm glad you like this look, Dana. I felt really good in it. It's light and airy. The skirt is fun because it has a bit of a cocoon shape, so it naturally sits away from the body.

  13. One of my favorite outfits on you (again!) - very cool! Many necklaces on you seem something new to me, and I love it! I wore a linen shirt similarly to yours on the 4th. I even have a picture or two where my tummy shows. :))) I'll post later. No tummy though. :)

Glad to hear you had such a wonderful romantic time with your husband!

  15. Happy Anniversary! I love how you styled this blouse. Had you left it buttoned it would have looked too boxy; this way accentuates your waist! So smart... Thanks for the inspiration.

  16. A beautiful ensemble!! Love it. Perfect skirt and sandals (no blisters in those babies). I love the unbuttoned part of the blouse and can only sigh that my stomach doesn't allow that. The skin is nice, but the stomach itself is bulging. Oh well, it is not that hot in The Netherlands anyway.
Glad you had such a joyful anniversary.
