Style Challenge: Patterned Leggings

After reading the Are You Shackled discussion, that many of you participated in, a dear friend contacted me to inquire about mature women wearing patterned leggings. She asked me if I thought the look was to young for our generation and above. I hesitated to respond because, like I mentioned in the discussion, I don't think age should be the overall determining factor when selecting an outfit or fashion. Anyway, she put me up to the challenge of showing how they can be worn without making older women look inappropriate.

On the left side of the demonstration is a daytime/playful look, and on the right - a look that would be more for work or an event that is artsy, but requires a level of fashion decorum. Below are 4 simple styling suggestion. Enjoy!

Styling Suggestions:
#1: I don't care how cute and toned your bottom is...I beg you...please, and I mean PLEASE, wear them with a top that completely covers your bottom. Leggings are simply glorified (thicker) pantyhose and wearing them with your bum exposed makes for an unfinished and albeit unattractive look.

#2: Style your leggings with a solid top that offers a level of sophistication, but has an element of fun. A plain ol' button down would be too dull.

#3: For your Career look, wear sensible heels. A heel that is too high may translate into something less appealing...if you know what I mean.

#4: Keep your accessories less fussy and let the leggings take center stage. Overly busy accessories in addition to the leggings can make you look like a circus clown. In other words, Keep It Simple.

  1. I personally would not wear patterned leggings. Patterned leggings would make me feel too self-conscious. However, I have seen others put together attractive outfits with them. I love the top!

  2. Thank you for the covered bottom suggestion. Even though I was a Pilates instructor for many years and I see beauty in every BODY. I really do. There are some bottoms that are best revealed in the gym/studio only. XXXXOOOOO

  3. I would wear patterned leggings if I found the right pair. I haven't yet but I've not given up. I was walking behind a young woman today who was wearing her leggings and pants and it just looked all wrong. It does look like the person forgot to put their skirt on.

    2. Yep Shawna, I know exactly what you mean. Didn't you feel like tapping her on the shoulder and say, "Excuse me, but did you forget something?"

    3. I agree with the above comments re: cover your bottom. Most times when seeing that you do not know whether to laughter, feel sorry for the person, or wonder how they could be so inconsiderate of others. I was informed by a younger person(s) that most who dress like that think that it is cute. Can someone put them on notice that 1) it is not cute and 2) could come across as disrespectful to those that are forced to see!

  4. Pretty combinations, and the proportions make it works so much better than what we so often seen. I also think the extremely crisp tunic fabric is a great foil for the skinny knit. Such good advice. All bums covered, and it's nice it it's substantial coverage and not just a long tee.
I must get over and read "Are You Shackled" ... you always have such pertinent ideas!

    1. I'm a little afraid of them too. However, if I wear them with a cute little short dress, that might be the way to go.

  9. I'm a huge leggings fan and I agree with all of your tips - especially #1! Whenever I wear leggings, pattern or not, my bottom is covered with a solid top.

Love the outfit inspiration(s), especially the daytime fun option!

  10. COMPLETELY agree with all your tips, especially the bum one! I hate when I see a girl walking down the street and fully seeing her chonies or even worse skin, not cute! Love both ways that you style these and that blue top... gaaaah, want!

    1. Yes, that top is so cute. Wish I could make it mine!

  11. Nope, I couldn't wear them out in public. They were a hot commodity at the beach but personally I don't have the body to pull them off, with or without a long tunic covering my bum.

    1. They might be fun to wear, but personally, I'm not interested in them either.

  12. Glenda,
I love both versions of this look. It is so well done. I do agree completely, that if wearing leggings a long top is in order. An exception can be made at the gym. Hate to sound so dogmatic, but there are guidelines for decorum, and they apply to a woman at any age.
Love the color and detail of the top you chose, too!

  13. I was reluctant wearing leggings in solid colours when I was young but did a few times. Bearing in mind everything you suggest with the exception of the heels. They were high. Little did I know but indeed it gave a common vibe. I have worn black thick leggings in winter when I was 50 underneath a dress which was a bit too short. But now that I am 60, I don't feel ladylike in them and stopped wearing them altogether. Just a personal choice. Patterned leggings I might have considered when I was 20, but I think I prefer patterned tight trousers.

    1. Like you, Greetje, I reserve leggings for wearing under a short dress or long tunic, but in solid black only.

  14. I haven't found a pair that I like yet. But when I do I will be dressing them up and dressing them down. Once again, age should not define what you wear as much as HOW you wear it. ie: with a long top reaching close to the thighs.
