Gray Matters

Gray isn't a shade that I wear often. However, when I do reach for the subdued hue - I make it matter. Since gray is essentially a reflection of light, it's very easy to pair it with just about anything. Last September I did a post called Lilac Legs where I wore a gray dress with heels and paired them with lilac colored tights. Click on Lilac Legs to see how I pulled off this playful gray look.

On a relaxed Friday morning, I chose to wear a loose fitting, peplum styled sweatshirt, slim cut white jeans and my favorite strappies to run errands. Since I like to travel light, I enjoy carrying wristlets or cross-body bags to house my keys, i.d. etc. For today, I selected my favorite colorful chevron print wristlet, which I have worn on several other blog posts. The high-energy colors in the bag, along with a pop of citrus on my feet, gives my non-colored outfit just the right amount of punch that is needs.

Today's Look: Heathered Peplum Sweatshirt: Anthropologie, White Jeans: Loft, Sandals: Nine West, Wristlet: Loft, Necklace was purchased from Nordstrom many years ago.

Style Idea: For an appropriate play on proportions, when wearing a loose top, pair it with a more fitted bottom and a delicate shoe. If your bottom is loose, then wear a more fitted top. (tweet this)

There is something quite lovely about the shade of gray. Like I mentioned previously, it works so well with the gamut of colors, and, in my opinion, it represents such a relaxed sophistication. What is your take on gray? Has it found a place in your closet?{wink}

  6. Hi Glenda! That sure hangs nicely on you, I could hardly call it a sweatshirt, but it looks so comfortable. Those pants are surely a sign of sunny days on the horizon. I hope I'm convincing to the PNW sun...he's a bit shy this time of year.

    1. This look really represents the California vibe. This look could take me to wine tasting, a jazz concert, to one our museums...you name it. We love our jeans! I waited for the top to go on sale. I got it for $19.95 :)

      Thank you Lenya :)

    1. I struggled with whether or not I wanted to wear green polish, but it turned out that I really liked it and it seemed to go well with my wardrobe. I think I will reach for gray more often. Thanks Cara!

  10. I love gray and wear it year-round. I have it in shades from light and silvery to dark charcoal. It's a useful alternate to black. I just have to make sure it's a "cool" gray with blue undertones rather than beige ones.

    1. Oh yes, I know exactly what you mean. The beige tinged grays do nothing for me either. It is the cool grays I enjoy. Thank you, I'm glad you like the top!

  11. Beautiful! I really like grey and particularly a soft charcoal. It goes with so many other colours I like and feels classic but softer than black. I recently tried a very grey-lavender polish on my toes and quite liked it. I generally don't do my fingernails but love my toes done. I am trying out a lighter shade of grey for spring and summer, which I will pair with blues, whites and lavenders.

    1. Oooo, that color combination sounds lovely...blue, white and lavender. I've been experimenting with nail colors, as I tend to stick with reds. Normally, I'm a bit more playful with my toes, but I figured I'll bring the excitement to my finger tips as well :)

  12. I'm sure you're know that photographers and painters use a "gray card"(a true neutral gray ... neither warm nor cool) to really see colors clearly. You're so right about gray. This is a killer shape, unusual for a peplum and excellent on you! You have the silhouette down pat! So pretty, your little orange sandals ... delicious.

  14. Glenda, I love the incongruity of the peplum body with the sweatshirt material. Also love the pairing of neutrals with the pop of color and texture from you bag and shoe. Well done, and I can't help but notice the sunshine!
    Great look!

  17. You look so chic and comfortable, and relaxed, Glenda! I love this hue of gray very much and wear it (maxi dress in one of my recent posts). I agree with you, it is so easy to pair with anything. Very comfortable and comforting hue.

I love the nail polish color here, and what a wonderful necklace you have. I adore your shoes, though can't imagine wearing them myself. :)

  20. Oh Glenda, I love this look, this outfit. So much that I even tried to order the top for myself although my body has a very different shape from yours. Could not find it. Probably sold out.
The turned up hems, the shoes, the bag.... Great styling.
Had to laugh when I read that these are your errand shoes. I love to wear high heeled shoes, but never can I wear them to run errands or go shopping. They would kill me.

    1. Oh wow, I can't believe it sold out. You may look on line for a similar shape. Anthropologie often has peplum tops in the coolest of fabrics. As a matter of fact, I saw one just two days ago in t-shirt and the peplum was done in a beautiful silky fabric. I'm thinking of adding it to my collection.
I'm glad you like this look. Very grab-and-go styling. You'll notice I turn my hem up often so that I can expose my shoes.
