Decolletage

D├ęcolletage: A French word meaning the upper part of a woman's torso, between her waist and neck, comprising her neck, shoulders, back and chest, that is exposed by the neckline of her clothing.

If you have been following So What to Twenty for some time, you would have noticed that I wear a great deal of sandals and off-the-shoulder tops.  When I purchase clothing, I make it a point to select items that will accentuate my favorite body parts. I'm not going to lie, I rather dig my tootsies and my decolletage. Is that a conceited thing to say? I think not. On the contrary, what woman, or man, would go about life hiding what they are most proud of? I can't think of one person.  For some reason, I find the deep grooves of my clavicle rather...sexy. I enjoy emphasizing this area!

Today's look consist of items that I have shared before and do one heck of a job showing-off my favorite parts. Skirt-Custom made by my sister, Steffyne; Top purchased at Nordstrom Rack; Sandals by Nine West; Rhinestone chain belt from Loft; Stacked Cuff purchased while vacationing in Mexico; Polish is Kyoto Pearl by OPI

The goal to achieving a clean look in wearing off-the-shoulder tops is to make sure you have a good strapless bra - if one is necessary (Tweet worthy). Please, I beg you, do not resort to wearing a bra with the clear straps. I loathe these types of bras because the clear straps are not fooling anyone. My strapless foundation of choice is by Lilyette. It comes in many sizes, and is similar to a bandeau which gives clothing a nice smooth appearance.

For a woman of a certain age, the key to wearing off-the-shoulder is simple. In today's look, the top is fitted, therefore, I have paired it with a flowing midi-skirt. If the top were more loose-fitting and with a bohemian feel, I would then pair the top with a more fitted bottom. To remain tasteful, a good rule of thumb is to show skin on a minimum basis (Tweet worthy). Since my shoulders are on display, I would never wear a tight fitting mini-skirt with this look. And, if I have my gams on show, I would then keep my upper body concealed.

Tell me ladies, are you brave enough to share with us what your favorite body part is? I dare you{wink}

  1. Perfection. Really. That outfit is just perfect for you. And a sister with sewing skills? How lucky are you. Now I just have to figure out MY best body part. I think it's my ankles. I must be Victorian!

  2. I love this outfit. It is so ladylike and has a 50's vibe to it. I like that the chain belt really works to accent the waist. I also like the almost nautical vibe this outfit has.

    1. Thank you Sharon. I debated on weather I should take a nautical approach on my discussion. But then I thought I would discuss something positive like our best body parts!

  3. Cute! And thanks for telling people tha clear bra straps are not fooling anyone. No one has a shiny strip on their shoulders. :-/

My favorite body part? My eyes. I'm blind as a bat but my eye color is pretty. Goes between light and dark brown depending on my mood.

  4. I like your outfit very much. Perfect for daily wearing and, yes, you have beautiful shoulders (and not only them). I think my best body part is my arms. They thin and feminine, with small palms. I think it looks very gently.

I hope to see you on a visit:)

  7. Amazing! I love how classy and sexy this is - that skirt is so well made! Your sister is one talented lady. I love that you highlight your favorite parts, good example for us all. In a world where we are always being told how to conceal our "problem areas" I like that you are taking a more positive approach - focus on the positive!

  13. You are one chic, classy, and stylish gal! This outfit was so made for you or at least you are truly owning it now. My favorite body part??? Well, it would have to be my stomach, which is still flat and muscly (due to lots of hard work outs).

I love this outfit and I agree totally that one should accentuate your best features. I also agree with your advice about keeping certain things fitted and other things looser. We should maintain a sense of modesty even while showing off our best assets. I love the color combination that you wore today, and I think your sister is very talented! You're looking fabulous, as ever! Kisses,

  16. Love your photos...the one in the link drove me here to your site! I like your bright full skirt with the fitted off the shoulder top. I sort of like a wide neckline myself or something that shows some back. And yes, it's good to say and own it! Debbie @ ilovemylemonadelife.com

  17. This outfit is gorgeous! That's a really pretty skirt style and suits your ladylike style well. I agree with you about those clear plastic bra straps. They look a bit odd to me and I can't imagine they are comfortable. I don't own a strapless bra as I don't currently have any off the shoulder clothes, but my shoulders aren't bad so I guess I might consider it.
Favourite body part? That's a real challenge for me as I am very self critical. I have bits that I think are okay and bits I think are flawed. I am not too comfortable showing much skin but I'm working on that. I think my favourite thing about my body is that it is well balanced.

  22. A beautiful outfit. And I learned another word: clavicle. I cannot remember wearing a strapless bra ... it must have been 20 years. It was a proper strapless one, but not a good one. Within the hour I had 4 boobs as the bra was going down. Never tried it again. Clevage, unfortunately is not very nice on me anymore. So many wrinkles between breasts and neck.. not funny anymore. So I keep my tops high, although I would love a cleavage. (Probably for the best that I cannot. I might get a bit over enthousiastic haha).
You my dear look fantastic in this outfit. And I agree with all your tips.
My best feature are my legs (as you know). Do I emphasize them? Heck yes.

  26. Lol on the clear strapless bra! I must say you're right, but sometimes as a woman who has big girls (lol), it can be hard to find a very supportive strapless bra. Sometimes, I love camisole/strapless ensembles, but again bras can be a nightmare here. I end up wearing a bra anyway and top it with a blazer or summin to cover it. Not fun!
On your outfit - I love it. Its radiant and effortlessly stylish. You look amazing. A very positive post. :-)

    1. Yes, it can be quite daunting Missy, when we have been blessed with big girls. The bra that I am speaking of actually has a minimizing effect. It is by far the best strapless I have worn.

  29. Hi Glenda, this is a great outfit that shows you do know how to dress your figure! The top looks great on you and I love this blue skirt. It all looks so pleasing to accent your pretty figure. I tend to wear tops that are fitted with a flared skirt. I like to wear colors that highlight my green eyes.

  32. Lovely outfit, glamorous you ... you must guess that I adore your skirt and you already know I think you have the prettiest feet! I'm glad to know I'm on your wavelength about the off-the-shoulder look. I've been considering it, but tops are difficult to find. Especially now that my hair is so short. Did you know that you're part of the inspiration for that? Mine won't go as short as yours (too much scalp on me!) but I've learned that one of the most appealing things about your approach to petite proportion is your close cropped head! So flattering on you (not just tootsies, but you have a pretty head shape!) I had to bully my hair stylist into the crop, but I'm so glad I did. You always inspire!

    1. Jan, you completely touched my heart today. Thank you. I have never been told that my head has a pretty shape. I went cropped by ease. I have a very active life in Southern California, especially in the summer. I spend most of my time in water. It's just easier. I enjoy having hair that doesn't require too much maintenance.

You look very pretty with short hair. I have always loved cropped hair on women. To me it represents boldness. There is no longer the hair to hide behind. Open shoulders works perfectly with our hair. I hope you are able to find the off-the-shoulder tops. Even halters look great. Have fun with your new do!

  34. Just a side note about strapless bras; Spanx makes their "Bra-Cha-Cha" strapless with molded cups and slide-in strap options. It is, bar none, the most comfortable strapless I've ever worn. And it stays put. Pretty cute shape, and no spill! A little pricey ( around $60?), but great if you have a little extra "boobage" to command!

    1. I'll have to investigate that option. I like the Lilyette because it has a minimizing effect...for extra boobage (lol).
